Postmortem
Trussed!! » Devlog
This is just to detail some of my thoughts now that voting in Bondage Game Jam has closed. I will be breaking this up on different three sections: what I feel went well, not so well and what I’d do differently.
What went well:
- That I was able to finish.. at all. It is always important to recognise that most entries do not see the light of day.
- I was able to control the project scope well. Those who were following my daily reports within the community would know that I identified scope creep as a possible major issue on the first day. It did take a few days but by the third day, I was able to rescope the project into something manageable.
- I went into the jam with a goal to experience different ways to make games than I would normally otherwise. This includes Godot, Inky and the whole writing process as well.
What went not so well:
- I found out that I am a very harsh critic of myself. This would be clear to those following my daily reports once again. I am not happy with the end product I ended up with. It can be very frustrating to know what needs to be done and either not having the skill or time to complete it. Due to my low opinion of the project, I have been mostly avoiding reading feedback on it. The judge's asset implementation rank for the entry will certainly reinforce that feeling.
- Losing a whole day of progress and having to rush to patch it up to make something worth submitting. Inky (the text editor used in the project) did not save my work from the sixth day of the jam. Thankfully I did have an incomplete output, so I had the work but no easy way to edit it during the final day of the jam itself. This issue is the reason why there are some debug messages in certain places. It was more stress which could have been avoided, in the end I just had to press submit and walk away.
What I’d do different:
- I’d avoid text based puzzles. The mechanic as a whole hasn’t aged well, more often than not it leads to confusing players. There were puzzles in the game that were on their first draft of implementation and it really shows, which implies that the game itself isn’t particularly polished. I do feel this is correctly reflected in the judge's player experience and audience's scores.
- I wish I’d joined a group and got more involved with the community and definitely consider doing so if another jam is hosted..
To my surprise I received a couple of comments relating to the future plans for the project. At this stage, I have no plans on working on Trussed!! in any form. However I am still interested in text based gameplay and may use what I’ve learnt on a new project.
